June – July Bees

One of the bee hives, which was formerly at the NHS Whitfield Farm and which has kindly been donated to us, has now been set up in the Poundbury orchard.  That brings our total to three!

Because of this, we have decided we should form a bee group at the farm, so that we can learn ourselves how to manage the bees, rather than always rely on experts.  Four of us (Judy, Katie, Kate and Tina) bravely climbed into roasting hot bee suits and opened up our three hives to check what was going on.  It was good to be doing it ourselves, but we were a bit doubtful of the outcome (so, yeah, experts, we still need you!)  We weren’t sure whether there were queens present in any of the hives, but a later inspection by the Official Bee Inspector showed that each hive does have a queen.
