How to get involved...
|
We want as many people as possible to get involved in Transition, and for everyone to find something that brings enjoyment and satisfaction. Here are some of the ways you can take part in this fascinating and important exploration....We'd like to find out more about your own interests and skills and help you figure out where to start. Here's the current list of things you can get involved with...
If you have a special interest or passion:
- Join and get involved with one or more of the Local Projects listed above
If you have time:
- Help out with office admin, communications, press releases, co-ordinating events, etc
- Help out at events, tea & biscuits, gathering peoples details for mailing lists, etc
- Offer your skills - (too many to list here)...creative stuff, media & promotion, giving presentations, talking to people about Transition, distributing flyers, running film nights, gardening, bicycle repairs etc
If you have something material to give:
- Support us financially (we're not for profit but still need finances for lots of things)
- Donate something useful - eg, tea bags, a venue to hold events, cake!
If there’s something you want:
- Have a look at the projects and see if there’s one that’s relevant. For instance, if you want access to a car you might like to join the Car Club; or join the Garden Share project if you want to grow something and have no garden
If you want to find out more:
- Come to an event - you can see our events (and lots of other great events) by clicking on the Events Calendar. There are regular talks, workshops, discussions, bike rides, tree plantings and all kinds of other things
- For an informal introduction to Transition, or just to keep up to date, come to our regular Green Drinks
- Visit the Transition Library - to borrow books and films on Transition issues, or buy a book through one of our links
Outside Dorchester and other groups:
- If you belong to a community organisation in the Dorchester area let us know about your local projects; please help your members know about Transition Town Dorchester through your newsletters, web-links, etc
- If you live outside Dorchester there may already be a Transition Initiative near you?... click here for a list of sustainability organisations in Dorset

| LOOKING FOR THE BIG IDEA - Monday 27th April 2009 |
Our first annual general meeting at Dorset Construction Centre,
 Poundbury, 5pm until 8:30pm
An AGM is ordinarily seen as a truly boring event. One Transitioner recently compared it as being rather less exciting than watching the waterside bobbing of a dead duck. However, the traditional format has been well and truly quashed and instead, our first Transition Town Dorchester AGM ‘Looking for the Big Idea’ will be more of a party, debate and Ideas-Fest!...Here’s the deal….
We can offer:
- Birthday cake and a glass of locally sourced fizz,
- Home-grown, home made and local food to eat and share
- Displays showing pictures of the activities we’ve all been up to
- Video clips and U-Tube moments showing Transition activities in action
- Party games - ‘The Woodland Web’
- Transition Topics - sharing of ideas and Transition Town Dorchester experiences around Energy, Waste, Food, Housing, Transport, Heart & Soul, Yooth
- Chance to snoop around Weymouth College’s new Construction Centre in Poundbury and free entry to the arts exhibition
- Access to the Transition Town Dorchester Library, Casterbridge Food Co-Op, information on the Dorchester Car Club, LETS and other local green groups
You can bring:
- Your very good selves (singly or in numbers - everyone is welcome)
- Ideas for projects, activities, groups and events sharing how we get more people involved
- Home-grown, home made or local food to eat and share
- News of your own Transition activities
Other stuff happening at ‘Looking for the Big Idea’
The event will be interactive, fun and motivational with loads of time to mingle, debate and discuss ideas, especially to think around solutions and to shape what we as a Transition Town should do next! Transition only works if you get involved so please feel inspired to ‘be the change’ and put the date in your diary. Go on…do it now!
Formal stuff like accounts etc will be shared through display boards to avoid mass printing and death by agm boredom but also to enable anyone to post questions and raise issues. Questions will be discussed in the Big Debate at the end of the evening. Here’s an outline of what’s planned so far:
5pm Doors Open, mingle/ view displays/ video clips/ bring and share food, visit art exhibition
5.30 Transition Topics - Energy, Waste, Transport - an exchange of activities and ideas on each of these Transition Topics
6.00 The Woodland Web - A Transition Party Game
No self-respecting party can happen without at least one party game - Andy leads this tried and tested game from the Transition Network
6.40 Birthday Cake and Fizz - Heart and Soul
A celebration of Transition Town Dorchester not to be missed
6.45 Transition Topics - Housing, Food and Yooth
An exchange of activities and ideas on each of these Transition Topics
7.15 The Big Debate - ideas, questions and discussion including questions posted during and before the event
8.00 Summing Up and Close
If you want to come to the this event, have a formal question you’d like answered or if you’d like to receive a copy of our very minimal accounts, constitution and annual report in advance, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing info(at)transitiontowndorchester(dot)org
FREE ENTRY Location: Dorset Construction Centre - Poundbury, Dorchester, Dorset, DT1 3AR....from 'Monkey's Jump' (McDonalds) roundabout head towards Poundbury, at the first mini roundabout turn right (3rd exit)...the Construction Centre is the large/long black wooden facia building on the right hand side.
