DORCHESTER AREA TRAVEL MAPS... for walking and cycling, etc...
At the Transport Group Gathering (see 4th March below), Adam Bows (he's the sustainable transport bloke from Dorset County Council) informed everyone about the upcoming Dorchester Area Travel Maps... basically it's like this:
  • Transition Town Dorchester are helping Dorset County Council with the maps, things like funding, promotion, design, printing etc
  • The maps are for encouraging people to walk, cycle, use public transport, etc

Please download the draft maps below (and let us know any mistakes).

What would you like to see on the map?

  • Useful places to park your bike?
  • Shortcut to the shops?
  • Quieter roads, lanes, footpaths, bridle ways?
  • Safer routes, to school, skate park, playground?
  • Significant places of interest?
  • Farm shops, places to stop en-route and refresh?
  • Quicker, direct routes?
  • Bicycle friendly pubs with secure parking?
  • Areas good for dog walking, dog poop bins?
  • Overall, the maps are for encouraging people to walk, cycle, use public transport, etc
  • Whatever ideas you have, please let us know!

Whatever you reckon should be on it!

TRANSPORT GROUP GATHERING - Thursday 4th March

The purpose of the Transition Transport Gathering was to:

  • have a general get-together of all the different groups/ people who are active or interested in sustainable forms of travel, transport, walking, cycling, facilities, public transport, shared transport, rural transport, walk-to-school, safe walking, paths, cycle and bridleways, electric bikes and electric cars, reducing car dependency, boats, airships or whatever!
  • to encourage discussion about sustainable travel and transport issues in Dorchester
  • to let people share local knowledge that would be useful for walking and cycling / which might appear on a transport map e.g. where are the dog bins, where are the cut-through's (this would be done using the "proof" transport map as a start point)
  • to show short video clips and / or have interactive opportunities for people to engage in transport matters, to share news about their groups, have fun and to feel inspired...

Thursday 4th March at the Corn Exchange main hall,
48 High West Street, Dorchester, Dorset, DTI IUT
from 7pm to 10pm

Entrance was FREE! - donations were invited, total raised was £5... TTD should remember to remind people for donations!
The people that came were interested in sustainable transport including e.g walking, cycling, riding, public transport, car-sharing, sustainable transport technology, maps, safety, routes and facilities

There's lots of transport related stuff already happening in our area, and there may be more (please let us know). There's no intention on repeating the good work that these are doing already:

  • Dorchester Strollers by Dorchester Area Partnership
  • Transport Planning Strategy by Dorset County Council
  • Weymouth Community Rail Partnership
  • Air Quality and Environmental Protection by West Dorset District Council
  • 55 Forum
  • Dorset Cyclists network
  • Cyclists Touring Club
  • Dorset AONB
  • A to B cycling magazine
  • Car Club lead by Dorset Community Action
  • South Dorset Ramblers
  • Western Area Transport Action Group
  • Bridport to Maiden Newton cyclepath
  • Treasure Trails Dorset
  • TAG

TRANSPORT GROUP Jobs Board

TRANSPORT
GROUP
LEADER

At present we do not have anyone leading on the Transport Group - this brings a rewarding opportunity for someone to help move the group forwards.

So far, the Transition Town Dorchester steering group has helped promote sustainable transport issues... many of our members already cycle, walk, use public transport and/ or are thinking about personal behavior change, ie, becoming less reliant on the car, giving up flying, joined the Car Club, etc. The Transport Group has huge, HUGE potential.

What will I get out of this job?
Transport Group friends (they will probably like to help you out)
A warm glow of empowering satisfaction

What tools do I get?
Email accounts
This web page
Access to the Events Calendar

Is there any money in it?
TTD has limited funds, but often pays for basic things like venue hire, tea & cake (very important), posters, etc.

Is there any money in it? (part 2)
...well, there is no wage money as such, but funding streams are often available. Some people find applying for funding is tricky, but there are people willing to give help & guidance. eg, DA21 have been very helpful. So yes, it is definitely possible to create your own paid job! (and why not)...

Do I need to be an expert?
No, you just need to have a healthy interest in sustainable transport and a willingness to learn.

Can I get training?
Quite a few TTD members have already received 'transition training' courtesy of TTD or DA21. If you would like training specific to transport subjects then other funding may be available elsewhere.

Where do I apply?
Send an informal email to: transport(AT)transitiontowndorchester(DOT)org
note: replace the (AT) with @ and (DOT) with .

Can I phone you instead?
Oh, ok... here's my phone number: 07743958353 (Steve; TTD website bloke)

ABOUT THE TRANSPORT GROUP

Domestic carbon emissions from transport account for about 22% of carbon emissions nationally. In Dorset it is higher - 31% of all carbon emissions from transport!

Recent Office of National Statistics stats (2010) indicate that emissions from transport fell about 1.9% but this is more due to the recession than any deliberate policies.

Dorchester needs to move towards more sustainable transport. If you would like to get involved, please email:

transport(AT)transitiontowndorchester(DOT)org
note: replace the (AT) with @ and (DOT) with .

In the meantime, there is much you can do on a personal level:

  • Stop flying
  • Walk and cycle more
  • Use public transport as much as possible
  • If you have to drive, there are other options

Car share whenever possible, for example, try:
www.carsharedorset.com

...and/ or join the Dorchester Car Club:

Drive slower and more economically, plan your journey and try to squeeze multiple purposes into a single trip, share shopping trips with a neighbour.

Of course, doing the above will also save you lots of cash, as well as the environment...
